Put me in coach…

I’ve come to my brother’s house to witness my nephew graduate high school and along the way my brother roped me into photographing his production plant (hey-I do these kinds of things for free airfare!)

In addition, my nephew is quite the baseball player. Shortstop if you’re interested. And good enough to earn himself both a scholastic AND athletic scholarship to play baseball for Butler University. I’d never seen him play before so this weekend I had my opportunity to see two games and I took full advantage.

However, I’ve been encouraged by the recent push into visual storytelling that Rear Curtain has encouraged. And I had a great time watching Sabrina Henry work her way through a Magnum workshop recently where she worked with the subject of dogs. So I thought I might take on a little project while here and explore high school baseball. I don’t know how this will turn out, or if I got the shots I need to make this work in the short time allotted, but it is quite a fun challenge to try to piece together some sort of visual story out of this.

So this image is the first of the lot. It is one quickly processes to be a teaser and I hope it does the trick.

LOVE the lines and composition in this image, Brian. Everything in here says “baseball” to me especially the idea of waiting. Speaking of waiting, I am now rather impatient to see your project although I have to curb my enthusiasm to see the results as projects need time…say one week or a Magnum 5 days?

Thanks so much, Sabrina. We’ll have to see how the story pans out. I was able to shoot two of my nephew’s baseball games and hope to build the story out of the images I got while there. I imagine if I wanted to do it properly I would visit as many games as I might need to make it work, but I think I’m going to limit myself to just these two for now. Keep your fingers crossed! 😉

Can’t wait to see the finished product! Mom

Thanks Mom, although I think it might be a bit different than you image…you know, all artsy and stuff! 😉

That’s an image that tells me a story. Love it.

How is your project going so far?

Brian Miller

Thanks Charlene! I really appreciate it! The project is going well. I’m confining myself to only those images I shot at those two baseball games so I am busy working with them to see what I can make of them. So far I’m having lots of fun and have been mightily motivated to work on both this project and another I’ve dreamed up during this process. This is quite a different state I’m in from several weeks ago when I was wallowing.

I’m going to pull it together into what I think is a usable format and then sit with it a bit and come back with fresh eyes. I’ll be sure to post some of the rejects (a la Sabrina!) in the run up to the final selection. I keep saying to myself, “what am I trying to say with this??” over and over. I’m finding it is helping me to focus in more.

Thanks so much for checking in and leaving a comment!
